It’s not just a strange world that’s presented to us in this new adventure from Walt Disney. The legendary family of explorers Clade traverses world after world, each stranger than the next: starting from one where icy mountains grow green plants, to another called Avalon where everything runs on said green plants, to the next where strange looking creatures float. to spots. in the air alongside shocking pink birds that feel like predators, to one where the blue ocean is surrounded by a giant cyclopean eye.

I’m sure there are more, but for now I’ll stop because this movie is not just a tour of many worlds in two hours. It highlights family values, the burden of expectations, parent-child relationships, strong women, and gay, outgoing, and proud young men. There have been other Disney movies that have experimented with gay characters, but ‘Strange World’ is the first in which the main character drives the narrative. Ethan Clade (Young-White) is a teenager totally in love with a classmate and has no idea how to tell him, just like every other kid his age. This is the good thing about the movie.

But not much else is. It is strange to say this about a film that offers us worlds full of flora and fauna that we have never seen before, and spectacular landscapes. But how many orange bird-like creatures and garish green blobs can amaze you? Very soon, too soon, really, all these things, which Disney must have spent millions and months on, fade into the background.

It’s only when humans and their conflicts, big and small, come to the fore that the film comes to life. An intrepid explorer, the elderly Jaeger Clade (Quaid) refuses to stop his search for a place beyond the mountains, even when his son Searcher (Gyllehaal) returns with a miraculous plant in hand. Only when Avalon is in danger, Searcher, along with his son Ethan, his wife Meridian (Union), an adorable three-legged mutt, and sharp-eyed Callisto (Liu), set out in search of the magical elixir that will save his life. . fertile land.

Immediately, old Jaeger appears, whom no one has seen for twenty-five years and who is still as irascible as ever. And they all go. Spaceships zigzagging and zigzagging, clever rescue operations, and finally daddy’s problems solved. It’s all very Disney. What sticks with you is young Ethan and the bright, shy romance of him. As one character says to another: ‘what, aren’t there bad guys? That’s a bad narrative.’

Strange World’s storytelling isn’t exactly bad. It’s just a tread by numbers, appearing only from time to time.
